From the Summer Camp Guide: Art Camps at the NWA Community Creative Center in Fayetteville

nwaccc-logo-200px-wideThe NWACCC  in Fayetteville offers some of the most creative hands on summer arts camps in NWA. Be sure to go to the www.nwaccc.org website for details, but take a sneak peak here:

Note:  All NWACCC children’s camps are $75 per weeklong session, and they run Monday-Friday. The exception is our one pre-school class (for child and one adult) that is $45 and runs for three days. Children are dropped off for all other classes.

Pre-School

The Mixed-Up Chameleon: Children will start by decorating paper with paint, stamps, etc. and then making a collage. You may bring a photo of your child to create a mixed-up chameleon. We will make clay chameleon creatures too. This is a class for children to create with their parent, grandparent or sitter.

  • Ages 4-5

Puppets Come to NWACCC

Kids will perform for family and friends during the last 20 minutes of class on Friday.

Wild about Puppets: Make and use a variety of puppets–stick puppets, hand puppets, finger puppets and more.  Have fun with puppet voices, movement and personalities.

  •  Ages: 5-7

Make a Crazy Puppet Show: Create a Muppet-type puppet with foam and cloth, one that looks like it’s REALLY talking.  Have fun with puppet acting, scripts and scenery to make an amazing show.

  • Ages: 8-12

Puppets Go Wild – and Green! Create crazy characters from recycled materials.   Have fun with puppet voices, movement and personalities.  A list of recycled items to bring will be provided.

Clay Camps

 Take an imaginary journey to the forest, sky and solar system. Each clay class includes a spin on the wheel and a little free time to create that special thing from your imagination. All will participate in an art show at the end of each Friday’s class.

The Character Forest: Create a forest where roots become twisted legs and arms and human and animal faces emerge from tree trunks, stones and mushrooms.

The Colorful Sky: Create the sky. Turn clouds into animals and fairies. Make moons with hair or clouds with feet. You get to be the creator of your own atmospheric sculpture!

Expanding Solar System: Create an astounding new planet where the grass is blue and trees have cat faces. The planet that you invent might have stars that are cubes and ponds filled with turkeys. Anything can happen when you are the designer.

My Happy Family Tree: Create a unique tree where you can hang clay faces of family members and pets: dad with his favorite hat, mom with a new hairdo or sister sticking out her tongue. Everyone will get to make a friendship bracelet with handmade beads, too.

Youth Wheel: Students will begin, or continue to learn, the satisfying art form of throwing on the wheel. Each child will have his or her own wheel. Students learn basic skills with one-on-one help.  Towards the end of each class students will have a free time to explore their own personal style.  Clay pots will be finished off with colorful glazes, handles and spouts. This class is a must for the hands-on artist.  Students need to be at least 54” inches tall.

Drawing Camps

Comics and Manga: Students will explore and create in the world of Manga (Western and Asian) comic book storytelling. This class will teach basic skills such as movement, perspective, depth and story lines, for creating on your own. A must class for developing your skills and techniques.

  • Session 1:  June 8-12, 9:00-11:30
  • Session 2:  June 22-26, 9:00-11:30
  • Session 3:  July 27-31, 9:00-11:30

Mixed Media Camps

Crazy for Art: This class focuses on the outdoor and is a great way for children to experience different art mediums. Dress them to get messy, learn and have fun. All will participate in an art show at the end of each Friday’s class. 

  • Ages 5-8
  • Session 1: June 15-19, 1:30-4: We’ll be painting forests and animals, creating a tubular cardboard aquarium and making a clay creature from outer space.
  • Session 2: July 13-17, 1:30-4: We’ll capture a special summer day on a fabric wall hanging sprinkled with fairy dust and create a clay pondscape with creatures and such.
  • Session 3: Aug. 10-14, 9:30-12: We’ll create paper-mache mobiles of clouds, suns, stars, moons and creatures that fly.

Kaleidoscope – Mosaic Designs: Create a collage of beautifully colorful vinyl mosaic designs, a creative mix of foil relief in silver with tinted colored recesses, paper scrolling, and more. This class is sure to please your inner creative soul. Students will see basic demonstrations on how to do the projects, and the rest is up to them.

  • Ages 8-12
  • June 29-July 3, 9:30-12

Incredible Paper-Making Class: First we make paper pulp, then we squirt it, squash it, press it, and mold it with many different techniques. Then we take our newly made paper and shape it into cool stuff like paper bowls, a great night light for your room, and/or design a paper piece of jewelry or ornament All using the paper you create.

  • Ages 7-10  
  • July 6-10, 9:00-11:30

Bead Weaving Class: Make your own loom, and then make a beaded friendship bracelet. You will learn to thread your loom for future projects, how to draft your own original design and how to finish the bracelet.  Amaze your friends with your cool bracelet, and be able to make more for gifts for all occasions.

  • Ages 11-15
  • July 20-24, 9:30-12

Create Your Own Camera and Make a Photogram: You think taking pictures is fun?  Then you’ll love making your own camera! Make images curve and bend and create a photogram in the darkroom.  You’ll be working in a fully equipped darkroom, where the magic of light and creativity make photographic magic.

  • Ages 10 and up
  • Session 1:  July 13th-17, 1:30-4
  • Session 2:  Aug. 3-7, 1:30-4

Veggie Prints and Animal Collage: Express yourself with an orange, apple or maybe a potato. Make prints on paper and fabric and then transform them into four legged animals. Check out the work of Eric Carle to get an idea of what they will look like.
