The Arkansas Discovery Network’s Mayan Mystery Exhibit
January 3, 2008 | 1 Comment
An archaeological team has disappeared from a dig site at an ancient Mayan temple in Palenque, Mexico. The scientists were investigating rumors of a priceless jade medallion buried in the ruins. Something horrifying apparently scared them off, but they managed to leave behind a video with clues and a warning to all who come after. Who can solve the puzzle, find the treasure and avoid the fate of the unfortunate archaeologists?
That’s the challenge children, parents and teachers face in “The Mystery of the Mayan Medallion,” an immersive exhibit developed by the Arkansas Discovery Network and presented by the University of Arkansas Center for Mathematics and Science Education. The exhibit will be on display from Monday, Jan. 7, through March 8 at the Joy Pratt Markham Gallery of the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville.
“We are very excited about this particular exhibit. Everyone likes a good ‘who done it’ and this experience blends just the right amount of mystery into real science and history,” said Lynne Hehr, director of the Center for Math and Science Education. “This exhibit uses the mystery and intrigue of the Mayan empire to explore math, science and history in a way that’s sure to capture the imagination of everyone who visits.”
Note: This event is being presented by the University of Arkansas Center for Mathematics and Science Education. All questions regarding the event should be directed to the University of Arkansas Center for Math and Science Education or the Arkansas Discovery Network .

Ozark Reptile Museum

All Side of Life reader, Jamie wrote to me with some details about the Ozark Reptile Museum. We have never been, but I am sure my boys would love it.
I wanted to let you know about another museum in the area worth visiting. It’s called Ozark Reptile Museum. It’s VERY small, but a neat place to go if you’ve got kids into snakes, lizards etc. (They even have an alligator.)
It’s located in a small L-shaped building next to Mermaids where 71 Business merges with Green Acres Road.
It’s open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoon. Admission is $1.50 for kids 5-12, $2.50 for 13 years and older and it’s free for kids 4 and under.
We didn’t do this, but we were told you could bring a camera and get your picture taken holding the 9 foot Boa!
Thanks for the tip, Jamie!

The museum has a “one of a kind” collection of aircraft, rare engines, and other exhibits. Newcomers to Northwest Arkansas may find it hard to believe that Drake Field was region’s main airport prior to the dedication of the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport in November of 1998.
