Baby & Toddler Music Classes

Baby & Toddler music classes based upon the Orff education theory that children of all ages are naturally musical are being offered at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Fayetteville.  The classes allow children and caregivers to experience music in a fun way.  Fee: $84 for 12 classes.

Below is a list of class offerings.  The ones with the strike through are full.  The others may still have openings.

  • Bouncing Babies (6 months-walking) Tuesdays 9:45-10:25am
  • Tuneful Tots I (1-2 years) Wednesdays 10-10:40am
  • Tuneful Tots II (2-3 years) Wednesdays 11-11:40am
  • Tuneful Tots I&II (1-3 years) Thursdays 10-11:40am
  • Melody Makers (3-4 years) Thursdays 11-11:40am

Crystal Bridges at the Massey’s After School Program

We are extremely lucky to have a world class art museum being built in Northwest Arkansas, and you can get a taste of what to expect by participating in the Children and Family Programs now being offered at Crystal Bridges at the Massey in Bentonville. 

For example, Crystal Bridges at the Massey hosts FREE after-school programs for kids ages 7-12.  Registration is required, and spaces fill quickly.  Here is the current schedule of upcoming Budding Artist classes, all of which have a botanical theme:

  • Thursday, March 6, 2008
    Plants & Paints — Discover the art of botanical illustration and take an up-close look at plants and flowers as you paint them in watercolor.
  • Thursday, April 3, 2008
    Flower Power - See artistic floral design in action – then create your own unique bouquet from paper.
  • Thursday, May 1, 2008
     Art in Bloom!  We’ll stroll to Compton Gardens to see what’s in bloom and capture nature’s beauty in brilliantly colored pencil.

The Children’s Program is a FREE drop-off program held monthly on Thursdays from 3:30-4:45pm for children ages 7-12 only; pre-registration is required (click here for a registration form), and space is limited.

Arts Live Spring Theatre Classes

Sorry for the late notice, but Arts Live Theatre’s Spring 2008 semester begins the week of Feb. 11, 2008 and continues through the week of April 25, 2008. 

Classes and productions are designed to provide theatrical training to children and youth from kindergarten to 12th grade.

The Art of Motion Dance Studio

I received a recommendation of the Art of Motion Dance Studio from Life+Kids reader Marti.  Here’s what she said:

This small dance studio in Fayetteville is run by Hannah Pasquinzo, a fabulous teacher and choreographer who focuses on developing the whole dancer with a serious concentration on ballet.

The Art of Motion, located in Colt Square in Fayetteville, offers classes for ages 3 and up.  Tuition starts at $49/month for a one hour weekly class.  You can find more information on the Art of Motion webpage by clicking here.

If you are interested, you might want to call soon.  The Art of Motion is waiving the $25 enrollment fee for new students enrolling in January 2008.

Gymnastics:  Introductory courses that teach the fundamentals of gymnastics

  • Beginner – Wednesdays or Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. – 6:50 p.m.
  • Intermediate – Wednesdays and Thursdays, 7:00 p.m. – 7:50 pm.

Pottery:  Learn the fundamentals of pottery, including how to mold, shape and paint clay. Families and adults are welcome in this class.

Rock Climbing: Learn the basics of climbing, belaying, and rappelling techniques.

Water Aerobics: This class is open to ages 14 & up.

Drama Classes for Kids at the Arts Center of the Ozarks

The Arts Center of the Ozarks in Springdale has announced its Spring class schedule.  Here are the drama classes offered for kids: 

Kids Theatre Production Workshop for 2nd-3rd graders with Kim Fuhrman

This production oriented class teaches the world of theatre through actual performance.  From auditioning to learning lines to developing characters, plus costumes, sets, lights, and sound.  Play title to be announced.

  • Performance on March 15th.
  • Saturdays, January 19 – March 15; 11:00-12:00 p.m.
  • ACO Members: $60 / Non-Members: $65

Creative Dramatics for K-1st graders with Nikki Thomas

This relaxed, fun class is the perfect beginning to learn about acting. Music and movement, theatre games, playing pretend and just having fun are at the heart of this class.

Students will also work on a small performance to be held on March 15th.

  • Saturdays, February 9 – March 15; 11:00 a.m.– 12:00 p.m.
  • ACO Members: $40 / Non-Members: $45

Drama Club Play Production for 6th-10th graders with Harry Blundell

Club members will work on a play to be performed, title announced after registration is complete. Students will be involved in all aspects of play production from casting to performances.  Memorization skills, characterization, script reading and analysis, stage presence and performance technique will all be explored as the students work on their show.

  • Wednesdays, January 16 - until mid April; 4:00 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Performance date to be announced
  • ACO Members: $160 / Non-Members: $175
  • There will be a $25 registration fee (which will hold your spot) and will be applied to the total amount when paid. There will also be a once a year a materials fee of $15, returning students will not be required to pay fee.

Kids Art Classes at the Arts Center of the Ozarks

The Arts Center of the Ozarks in Springdale has announced its Spring class schedule which includes lots of art classes for children.  The classes for “all ages” would be great family activities (kids under 6 take the class with an adult)

Art Club for K-5th graders with Audrea Danenhauer

Students will enjoy exploring and working on many different art projects over the course of the semester. Classes are divided into month long units with each unit focusing on a different project.  Students will use a wide variety of media including painting, drawing, printmaking and clay.

  • UNIT 1: Tuesdays, February 5 – 26; 3:45-5:15 p.m.
  • UNIT 2:  Tuesdays, March 4 – April 1 (excluding Spring Break); 3:45-5:15 p.m.
  • UNIT 3: Tuesdays, April 8 – 29; 3:45-5:15 p.m.
  • UNIT 4: Tuesdays, May 6 – 27; 3:45-5:15 p.m.

ACO Members: $45 / Non-Members: $50 (Price is per Unit)

Fun Mud for K-5th graders with Audrea Danenhauer

Students will play with various kinds of clay and techniques to make one-of-a-kind works of art. Project will vary by unit. Students may also have an opportunity to use the pottery wheel depending on age and skill level.

  • UNIT 1: Mondays, February 4 – 25; 3:45-5:15 p.m.
  • UNIT 2: Mondays, March 3 – 31 (excluding Spring Break); 3:45-5:15 p.m.
  • UNIT 3: Mondays, April 7 – 28; 3:45-5:15 p.m.

Private Instruction for all ages with Audrea Danenhauer

Students will receive four 1½ hour lessons of private art instruction, exploring any media desired i.e. watercolor, collage, print making, wheel throwing etc. All skill levels welcomed. Students may take in pairs or small groups. BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.

Multi Media Medley for all ages with Eden Miller

Students are given an opportunity to explore and combine techniques to create mixed media pieces. Children six and under must take classes with an adult. Projects different each unit.

  • UNIT 1: Saturdays, February 2 – 23; 9:30-11:00 a.m.
  • UNIT 2: Saturdays, March 1 – 29 (excluding Spring Break); 9:30-11:00 a.m.

Pencils to Paint for all ages with Eden Miller

This class is designed for all skill levels in drawing, watercolor, and pastels. Advanced students may explore other media with permission of instructor. Projects will be different in each unit. Cost is per person, per unit. Children under 6 must take class with a family member.

Prenatal Yoga at the Arkansas Yoga Center

The Arkansas Yoga Center in Fayetteville is beginning a prenatal yoga class on October 3, 2007.  Here are the details:

Kathy Thompson’s Student Art Classes

Kathy Thompson is teaching Art Classes at Studio 3 in Fayetteville.  The classes run from October 2007 through May 2008.  I have heard she is a wonderful teacher. 

Here’s the schedule:

  • Grades 1-4  Mondays 3-5pm
  • Grades 5-8 Tuesdays 3:30-5:30pm
  • Grades 9-12 Wednesdays 3:30-5:30pm

Strollerfit is Coming to Northwest Arkansas

Is anyone familiar with the Strollerfit exercise program?  I just found out that the franchise is coming to Northwest Arkansas.  I love the idea:  a postnatal workout class with your baby, so no childcare needed!

Check out this article about a Strollerfit class in Virginia.  Be sure to watch the video (upper right hand corner of the page).  It looks like tough workout, but fun for the babies.

My kids are no longer stroller age.  So, if any of you try the class, let me know how you like it.  Thanks for the tip, Leah!
