The world’s premiere children’s entertainers, The Wiggles, are about to make cinema history with the release of the first ever live-concert movie for preschoolers. Beginning on March 20^th, 2010, theaters across the United States will feature the happiest show in town. The Wiggles and CinemaLive are proud to present The Wiggles – BIG, BIG SHOW In The Round, a circus inspired concert filmed at The Acer Arena in the group’s hometown of Sydney, Australia on December 20, 2009.

The Kindergarten program is designed for children 5 years of age that would benefit for another year in a lower child to teacher ratio setting before starting elementary school. The Kindergarten is taught by an Arkansas certified teacher and is structured to follow the Arkansas Kindergarten Frameworks.  The creative theme based curriculum and activities were designed to incorporate all learning styles and levels of development while making learning fun.

Artifact Identification
In honor of March as Arkansas Archeology Month, the Shiloh Museum in Springdale will host an artifact identification program Saturday, March 6, at noon. Archeologists from the Arkansas Archeological Survey will be on hand to answer questions about prehistoric and historic artifacts brought in by the public. Arkansas Archeological Society Training Program
Arkansas State Archeologist emerita Hester Davis will present “So You Always Wanted to Be an Archeologist,” Wednesday, March 17 at noon at the Shiloh Museum. Her talk will focus on the Arkansas Archeological Society’s training program for amateur archeologists.

Kindergarten registration for the 2010-11 school year will begin at all Fayetteville School District elementary schools on Thursday, April 1 from 8 am until 6 pm.

To register your child for kindergarten in the 2010-11 school year, your child must be 5 years of age on or before August 15, 2010. The only exception to this is if your child is currently attending a state-approved pre-kindergarten program and will be 5 years of age on or before September 15, 2010. Those children are eligible to enroll.

To enroll your child for kindergarten, please bring the following items to the school:

* proof of immunization (immunization record)
* child’s social security number
* proof of residence (utility bill or rental agreement)
* proof of age (birth certificate)

The Learning Network

The NYT Learning Network is an amazing resource for not-your-run-of-the-mill lesson plans. Great for homeschoolers, but also for regular parents like me. As a mom, I use it to give me ideas for topics I can incorporate into discussions at home (in the car, at the table, before bed, etc.). I have never tried to follow a lesson plan, but I have used the topics as conversation starters with my kids.

New Exhibit at the Shiloh Museum in Springdale

All Dressed Up, an exhibit of men’s, women’s, and children’s fancy clothing, will open at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History on Monday, February 1.

“The exhibit includes clothing worn by folks in Northwest Arkansas on special occasions,” said Carolyn Reno, museum collections manager.  “It’s a wonderful variety of finery, such as an elegant tailor-made tuxedo, a stunning homemade prom dress, and a child’s beautiful blue sailor suit,” Reno continued.

The exhibit will be on view through January 22, 2011. Located at the corner of Johnson and Main in downtown Springdale, the Shiloh Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Admission is free.  For more information, call 750-8165.

Pajama Party at the Fayetteville Public Library

The Fayetteville Public Library will host a Goodnight Moon Pajama Party on Friday, February 5 at 3:30 p.m. in the library’s Wal-Mart Storytime Room.

Three cast members of the Goodnight Moon production at Walton Arts Center will read from the classic children’s book. The library will hold a ticket giveaway for the performance at the Walton Arts Center.

Come in pajamas and bring a favorite blanket or stuffed animal.

Chinese New Year Celebration at the Fayetteville Public Library

Fine Arts Intersession Camp for K-4th Graders at the Trike Theatre in Bentonville

If your kids are looking to burn off energy in a creative kind of way this February break, join Trike Theatre as it takes over the halls of R.E. Baker Elementary School.

The professionals from Trike, a professional theatre for youth located in downtown Bentonville, will travel to Africa during Trike Theatre’s African Folk Tales Fine Arts Intersession Camp for kindergarten through fourth graders during the week of February 8.
“We’ll retell the famous trickster tales, Anansi the Spider and Zomo the Rabbit, through drama, dance and visual arts” said Jason Suel, who along with fellow Trike instructor, Chamisa Wheeler, will lead the creative endeavor.  “Students will act the characters, learn African dances, create masks and puppets, design sets and props and make African instruments.  They will rehearse the stories all week and perform their short plays on Friday for family and friends.”

Camp will be held at R.E. Baker Elementary, 301 N.W. Third St. in Bentonville, from 8 a.m. (7:30 a.m. for bus riders) to 3 p.m., February 8-12. Students should bring snacks, water and lunch each day, while opening the door to a world of creativity and expression.
The price is $165, plus a $10 Trikester membership fee.

Spring Classes at the Trike Theatre in Bentonville

Drama classes for 4 year old through 8th grade students begin on Monday, February 15th at the Trike Theatre in Bentonville.

• The youngest Creative Players (4-preK) can join Marie or Chamisa for story drama classes based on Goodnight Moon and other stories.
• Kindergarten-2nd grade Creative Players will build theatre skills based on Cam Jansen Detective stories with Erika, or puppetry skills with Marie through Goodnight Moon and other stories.
• Third-fifth graders in the Sophomore conservatory will study and perform scenes in Jason’s Contemporary Scene Study class.  Students will learn methods for strengthening vocal and physical presence onstage when performing in Erika’s Voice & Movement class.  Students will also learn how to physically and vocally create different characters for the stage using props and masks with Erika in the Character class.
• Sixth-eighth graders in the Junior Conservatory will bring a playwright’s scene work to life in Jason’s Contemporary Scene Study class.  Students will gain creative control over their voices and bodies while on stage with Erika in the Voice & Movement class.

Community Seed Swap at the Fayetteville Public Library

The Inaugural Fayetteville Community Seed Swap will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2010, from 1:30-4:30 at the Fayetteville Public Library.  Arkansas farmers and gardeners have a long legacy of heirloom seeds, and these plants are in danger of being lost.  This event is to encourage the production of diverse varieties for posterity and for more sustainable living in the present.

Anyone may attend to trade and distribute open-pollinated (heirloom, old-timey) seeds of food crops, herbs, or ornamentals.  Hybrid seeds will also be traded and distributed.  If you have no seeds to swap but want to learn more, come along to mingle with gardeners and farmers who can provide great insight about heirloom seeds.

There will be a short presentation about seed saving at the beginning of the event, followed by demonstrations, seed distribution, and a seed savers exchange.  This event will do much to conserve the heritage of Arkansas while we share good stories, beautify our yards, and, of course, save seeds.  It is free, fun, and a great way to spend a little time and share the love on Valentines Day.

This event is sponsored by the Fayetteville Community Gardening Coalition (FCGC), the University of Central Arkansas’s (UCA) Conserving Arkansas’s Agricultural Heritage (CAAH!) Creative Writing Workshops Offered

Youth: Mondays, January 18 through February 22, from 4 to 5 p.m., in the Fayetteville Public Library’s Wal-Mart Storytime Room & Teen: Tuesdays, January 19 to February 23, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Fayetteville Public Library’s Wal-Mart Storytime Room: The Fayetteville Public Library will offer six-week creative writing workshops for students this winter. Razor’s Edge in Farmington has Kids Eat Free all day on Tuesdays. They serve breakfast all day, have burgers, wraps, salads, chicken fried steak and more and amazing rolls.. they call it monkey bread but whatever it is, they are wonderful!    I ate there yesterday with my 4 year old daughter & since kids eat free was going on , our meal total was $7.00.

Also, Penguin Ed’s has started a Kids Eat for 99 cents with the purchase of an adult meal.. that’s on Tuesdays as well.

I also noticed that AQ Chicken is offering their traditional January kids eat free special on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

The Fayetteville Public Library will host an origami workshop on Saturdays, January 16, 23 and 30.

The classes begin at 2 p.m. in the library’s Wal-Mart Storytime Room.

The workshop teaches participants origami using simple geometric shapes.  The class is designed for ages 10 years old through adults.

The class is free and open to the public.

Arts Live Theatre is hosting auditions For Annie on Saturday, January 9th from 1-4pm and Sunday, January 10th from 2-5pm at Arts Live’s new location on Sang Avenue in Fayetteville.

Ages 7-18

Performance dates for Annie are March 12-14, 2010.

New art exhibit openings and receptions hosted by ddp gallery and The Fayetteville Underground will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., January 7, 2010.  More information can be found regarding the art galleries and specific artists at fayettevilleunderground.com and ddpgallery.com.

To ease parking needs, the paid parking lot next to the East Square Plaza building (to the east) will be open for FREE parking on Thursday night.  Also there are two large city lots that are free after 5 pm.  These lots are located to the west of Block Avenue between Mountain and Meadow.

The Downtown Square is filled with over a dozen locally owned shops and at least 9 restaurants, come and get reacquainted with the Square this Thursday and support local artists and galleries!
