Butterfly Bench in Honor of Olivia Ray

by Terri Chadick on January 15, 2010

It has been several months since we lost 10 year old Olivia Ray when she was hit by a car on Razorback Road. Various efforts are ongoing to honor Olivia and assist the Ray family, but I wanted you to know about a special project of particular interest to our community.

We are Building A Butterfly Bench in Memory of Olivia

The Leverett Elementary PTO commissioned local artist Eugene Sargent (creator of the amazing benches around the Wilson Park castle) to design a bench overlooking the Leverett playgrounds in Olivia’s honor. Here is his design:

The bench will be located on a small hill overlooking two playgrounds. The Rays and countless other Leverett parents have spent many an hour talking and watching their kids play from that spot.

We believe this bench perfectly represents the little girl who loved butterflies and left us much too soon.

Her parents agree.  From John:

How did you know some of my best memories of Olivia are chasing her around the castle and benches at Wilson park? How did you know that it would take something absolutely unique to capture a bit of what we cherish in her? How did you know to dream and work for something so far beyond what Jane and I could have imagined?

How did you know to do something so perfect?
