Kids’ Art-Car Activity at the Pinnacle Hills Art Festival

Eureka Springs artist Ralph Wilson, who is also known as Mr. Shrine, will host a FREE hands-on family and children’s art-car activity at The Pinnacle Hills Art Festival, on Saturday, September 6th from 10am-noon at the Pinnacle Hills Promenade in Rogers.

Mr. Wilson will bring lots of mini-art-car materials for children of all ages to make model art cars.  Here’s a link to Mr. Shrine’s mini-art-car page so you can get the mini-car idea.

The big versions of art cars from several northwest Arkansas “cartists” will also be on display during the event.

BirthNetwork of NWA Events

birth.jpgIf you are exploring alternatives to traditional maternity care and birth options, you should know about The BirthNetwork of NWA (link) – a local organization established to promote “mother-friendly” maternity care. 

The organization is hosting two BOLD Red Tent events at local farmers markets where women can gather to listen to birth stories and record their own.  Henna painting, belly painting and massage will be offered as well.  Click here for more information (link).

On Friday, September 19th, 2008 at Teatro Scarpino in Fayetteville, BirthNetwork is presenting a local performance of “Birth”, a play by Karen Brody that is part of the BOLD (Birth On Labor Day) Movement.  Tickets are on sale now.  Buy early, as they expect a sell out of the play.  Click here for more information (link).

Here’s a summary of the current class offerings:

Creative Movement/Pre-Ballet (ages 3-5 years):  This class is to introduce young children to dance in a playful setting.  They are taught rhythm and coordination with song and dance routines.  It is a soft beginning to dance, teaching them the basic skills and terminology needed for ballet, tap, and jazz.

Combo (ages 6-8):  This is a new class at The Art of Motion which will allow younger students to experience ballet, tap, and jazz in one, 2-hour class.  This will be a wonderful, well-rounded introduction to dance for both students and parents.

The Art of Motion also offers classes in ballet, jazz, lyrical, hip hop and tap for ages 6 - Adult and Pilates for ages 14 and up.

It’s Almost Butterfly Time at the Botanical Gardens!

Plan to visit the Botanical Gardens of the Ozarks during peak butterfly season.  The Garden offers guided butterfly walks by appointment and each Sunday at 1pm starting September 14.

Visitors can observe caterpillars, chrysalises, and newly emerged butterflies in a special display case. Young visitors will recieve a special bookcover featuring native butterflies of Arkansas.

The best time to observe the butterflies is the early afternoon, but there is butterfly activity throughout the Garden on sunny days.

Butterfly festival activities are free with paid Garden admission.  Admission: $5 for adults; $2.50 for kids 5-12, small children free.

The Frisco Festival in Downtown Rogers

The Frisco Festival (Friday, Aug. 22-Saturday Aug. 23) is a fun kid friendly festival.

The festival kicks off with the catfish fry starting at 5pm on Friday Aug. 22 with amusements and the ice cream social starting at 6pm.  On Saturday, Aug. 23 the day starts with a pancake breakfast from 6:30-11am with amusements beginning at 9am.

You can see the entire Frisco Festival event schedule by clicking here, but I have highlighted a few of the kid friendly events below:

  • Kids Muster (mini version of the firefighter’s skills test) - Saturday from 9-11am
  • A&M Railroad excursion train rides
  • FREE Ferris wheel, superslide, climbing wall, roller coaster, merry-g0-round, kids area (7 and under)

Of course, what is a festival without food?  Here’s what you will find:

  • An old-time ice cream social will be held Friday and Saturday at First and Walnut streets. The event is sponsored by Good Humor Breyer’s
  • If fried catfish and hush puppies are your favorite, the Rogers Rotary Catfish Fry is the place to be Friday starting at 5 p.m. at Second and Elm streets. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children.
  • Getting up early on Saturday? Stop by Second and Elm Street for the Early Risers Rotary Pancake breakfast. Cost is $6 per person.
  • Sandwiches, homemade pie and air conditioning  are the highlights of the Fill-R-Up Cafe at First United Methodist Church in Fellowship Hall, Third and Elm Streets.  Restrooms are available.
  • Concessions will be available in the food court near The Morning News Main Stage at First and Elm streets.

Cloth Diapering Workshop at Terra Tots

Interested in exploring cloth diapering, but not sure if it is the option for you?  Learn more at Terra Tots’ cloth diapering workshop on Saturday, August 30th at 4pm at Terra Tots in Fayetteville.  Bernice and crew will discuss the many diapering options available, laundering advice, reasons to use cloth, etc.

Bentonville Fall Baseball Registration Deadline — Wed. August 20th

Registration for Bentonville Fall Baseball (ages 7-16) is now open and will continue until August 20th.  Registration fee is $65.

Practice will start the week of Labor Day. Games will begin 9/11 or 9/13. Teams to play 2 games a week for 6 weeks.

Registration is now available online at the website www.bentonvillecalripken.org

In person registration will be Sunday, August 17th from 1:00 till 4:00 and Monday, August 18th from 6:30-8pm at the Arvest Conference Center behind the Arvest on the square in downtown Bentonville.

Leagues will be played for youth ages 7-16 based on age on April 30, 2008.

  • Ages 7-9 will play 46′ mound 60′ closed bases playing Thursday and Saturday
  • Ages 10-11 will play 50′ mound 70′ open bases playing Thursday and Saturday
  • Ages 12-16 will play on 60′ 6″ mound and 90′ bases Playing Saturday and Sunday - (plan is for 12-13 yr olds and 14-16 yr old leagues however final breakdown will depend on number of registrations at this level)

Arts Live Theatre Classes begin September 15

It’s that time of year again as Arts Live Theatre, Northwest Arkansas’ only dedicated Children’s and Youth Theatre Company, begins its Fall Fun with classes beginning the week of September 15th!
 
Classes will be offered in a variety of sections for grades K-12, including the popular Playmakers series for the youngest actors-to-be, and the Theatre Lab series for grades 8-12. Classes include various levels of acting from beginner to advanced, Comedy Improv, productions classes and more! Arts Live will also be offering special performance opportunities for enrolled upper level students.  Classes will conclude the week of November 17th with showcase performances.
 
Arts Live provides professional training for young actors through classes and main stage performances. Past productions include The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, High School Musical, Grease and most recently, Seussical The Musical.  
 
Auditions for the original production of Christmas Carol High School with be Saturday and Sunday, September 27th and 28th.

Community Back to School Bash

The Trinity Fellowship Assembly of God on Rolling Hills Drive in Fayetteville is hosting its first annual Community Back to School Bash on Saturday, August 16th, 2008 at 3pm.
 
The event will include free food, inflatables, prizes, and a concert with Uttermost at 5:00. The event is FREE to the community, and targets students from K-12.
 
Prizes include everything from balls and bikes to an XBOX 360 and a Wii. School supplies will also be distributed to families in need.

38th Annual Ice Cream Social

This is a great way to end the summer — homemade cakes and ice cream and lots of activities for kids of all ages.  I hope to see you there!

The Washington County Historical Society’s 38th annual Ice Cream Social will take place from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, August 16, at Headquarters House, 118 E. Dickson St. in Fayetteville.

Children 6 and under a FREE.  $5 for adults, $2.50 for children 6-12, $15 max per family.

Homemade cakes and Hiland Dairy ice cream will be served. Graduates of WCHS’ Heritage School will conduct botany and herb garden tours for children, with a lesson of afternoon tea etiquette in a secret garden. The Community Imagination Studio and YouthCAN! programs will also provide children’s art activities.

Additional events include Headquarters House tours, an antique car display, living history persons, dancing and entertainment by Heritage School students, an oil-painting raffle ticket sales, and WCHS membership opportunities. Local musicians will provide live entertainment, and the Book Store and Gift Shop will offer a 10% discount on all merchandise during the event.
