2007 Ozark Balloon Fest: June 1-2
May 18, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Update: The Chamber has announced that it will no longer be hosting the Balloon Fest. So, unless things change, 2007 was the last Ozark Balloon Fest.
The Ozark Balloon Fest is a great family event in Bentonville. The festival has an amazing number of hot air balloons, as well as carnival games and food.
My favorite part of the event is the “Balloon Glow” at 8:45pm each night. When the weather is good, the Glows are spectacular to see. Also, Balloon flights occur at 6pm each night. The proceeds from the event benefit the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter.
- When: Friday, June 1 from 5-10pm and Saturday, June 2 from noon-10pm
- Where: Bentonville Municipal Airport (map)
- Cost: $4 adults, $2 children 3-12, Free under 3 years old
Walton Arts Center’s 2007-2008 Season
May 17, 2007 | Leave a Comment
The Walton Arts Center has recently announced its 2007-2008 season. Each time I see a Walton Arts Center season brochure, I am reminded how lucky we are to have the WAC here in Northwest Arkansas. This year is no different. The season is full of great events for families.
My favorite new package is the “Flex Series” where you create your own subscription by choosing 4 or more shows from any category. I think this series is a great option for families.
Under the Flex Series, you could buy tickets to some of the Broadway shows like Annie or Stomp without having to purchase tickets to shows that may not be as appropriate for children. Instead, you can round out your package with shows from the Playtime for Kids or the Family Fun categories (or, broaden your child’s perspective with an event from the World Arts, Music, or Dance categories).
The only problem is that there are too many good shows to choose from!!! These are the shows I am currently considering for my boys:
- Stomp
- Annie
- A Year with Frog and Toad
- The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley
- Shaolin Warriors
- Peter Pan
- Beakman Live
- Guy Davis Family Blues Show
That looks like a very good year.
Download the Flex Series and Broadway Series brochures and order forms here. Season tickets are now on sale.

A traveling exhibition of original tearsheets from Norman Rockwell’s Saturday Evening Post covers (including Rosie the Riveter and the Four Freedoms) will be on display at the Rogers Historical Museum from May 22 through August 11, 2007. The exhibit will also include a corner of a typical living room during the 1940’s. There, visitors can listen to radio broadcasts from the war years, read magazines of the era, practice the civil defense skill of plane spotting, or experience meal planning during a time of rationing.
Also, the museum has scheduled several programs for children during the week of June 13 through 16, 2007:
Wednesday, June 13, 2007 from 9 to noon
(For children who have completed grades 3 - 5)
Discover a new hobby! Make and decorate your own flower press. Then visit the Rogers Farmers Market to select some blossoms to press.
Thursday, June 14, 2007 from 9 to noon
(For children who have completed grades K - 2)
Explore the craft of rag weaving. Weave a placemat from a kit.
Friday, June 15, 2007 from 9 to noon
(For children who have completed grades 3 - 5)
Our ancestors wove rugs from strips of old fabric. You can select fabric, cut strips, and weave a placemat using the same technique.
Cost per session: $7 for members of the Friends of the Museum, $10 for non-members
Go to the Rogers Historical Museum website for more information, including more detail on its current exhibits.
Fayetteville’s Mud Creek Trail
May 14, 2007 | Leave a Comment
We purchased a new bike on Saturday at the Fayetteville Bicycle Company for our oldest, and our youngest began to ride for the first time without training wheels, so this was a big biking weekend for our family.
On Sunday, we rode the Mud Creek Trail in Fayetteville and had a great time. You can park at the trail head on Old Missouri Road, near Joyce Blvd. and ride all the way to Steele Blvd. We detoured from the trail to the Red Robin restaurant (on the sidewalks) and then back to the trail, and our car after dinner. The weather was perfect, and we all enjoyed the ride.
The trail has just enough compacted gravel and dirt spots to make your kids think they are off-roading. And best of all for me — no hills!
Here’s a map of the Mud Creek Trail. Or, check out Fayetteville’s other trails on the city’s new website.

Fayetteville Public Library’s Summer Reading Program
May 9, 2007 | Leave a Comment
The Fayetteville Public Library has posted information on its Summer Reading program. Kindergartners through sixth graders who sign up for the program (you can do so online) receive reading logbooks and earn stickers and prizes as they track their reading in the logbooks. It is a fun way to keep kids reading during the summer. Older kids have can take part in the teen reading program.
Be sure to check out the library’s summer calendar of events. There are tons of activities scheduled for kids of all ages.
