Kids can ride in a real Monster Truck and attend a pit party where they can see the trucks up close, and collect autographs from the drivers.

- When: Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2 at 7:30pm
- Where: Parsons Stadium, Springdale
- Cost: $18 adults, $9 kids at the door ($17/$8 if purchased in advance)

Reader Question

An All Sides of Life reader is looking for a gymnastics class for her 2 year old son (they live in Fayetteville). My son’s preschool (Montessori Children’s House in Fayetteville) offers movement and tumble time classes during the school day, so I have not scheduled any outside lessons.
Do any readers have recommendations or suggestions? If so, comment on this post or email me directly at allsidesoflife@gmail.com.

Local Story Times and Children’s Book Groups — UPDATE
May 30, 2007 | 1 Comment
UPDATE: AJ mentioned in the comments that B&N is no longer hosting the Monday toddler storytime. The other times from the B&N website may be dated as well. I will check with B&N and update this post when I hear back from them.
————————
Now that summer is just around the corner, I am looking for various activities to keep my kids busy. I knew that Barnes and Noble offered regular story times, but I wasn’t sure of the schedule. So, I wandered over to the Barnes & Noble website, and found that you can search for upcoming events at your local store. Here’s what I found for Fayetteville:
- Mondays at 11am — toddler storytime
- Saturdays at 11am — children’s storytime
- Friday, June 1 at 7pm — family game night
- Friday, June 8 at 4:30pm — Modern American Girls book group (ages 5-8 and 8-12)
- Saturday, June 9 at 1pm — Junie B Jones book group (ages 8-12)
I love the idea of the Junie B Jones and American Girls book groups. What a great way to encourage your child’s love of reading. Unfortunately, my boys are more into superheroes (although they would love a Magic Tree House book group).
The Borders bookstore in Rogers is another excellent place for story time (you can search for upcoming events on the Borders site as well). Upcoming story time themes include Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter and Father’s Day. Go here for more information on the story times at Borders.

2007 Ozark Balloon Fest: June 1-2
May 18, 2007 | 1 Comment
Update: The Chamber has announced that it will no longer be hosting the Balloon Fest. So, unless things change, 2007 was the last Ozark Balloon Fest.
The Ozark Balloon Fest is a great family event in Bentonville. The festival has an amazing number of hot air balloons, as well as carnival games and food.
My favorite part of the event is the “Balloon Glow” at 8:45pm each night. When the weather is good, the Glows are spectacular to see. Also, Balloon flights occur at 6pm each night. The proceeds from the event benefit the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter.
- When: Friday, June 1 from 5-10pm and Saturday, June 2 from noon-10pm
- Where: Bentonville Municipal Airport (map)
- Cost: $4 adults, $2 children 3-12, Free under 3 years old
Walton Arts Center’s 2007-2008 Season
May 17, 2007 | Leave a Comment
The Walton Arts Center has recently announced its 2007-2008 season. Each time I see a Walton Arts Center season brochure, I am reminded how lucky we are to have the WAC here in Northwest Arkansas. This year is no different. The season is full of great events for families.
My favorite new package is the “Flex Series” where you create your own subscription by choosing 4 or more shows from any category. I think this series is a great option for families.
Under the Flex Series, you could buy tickets to some of the Broadway shows like Annie or Stomp without having to purchase tickets to shows that may not be as appropriate for children. Instead, you can round out your package with shows from the Playtime for Kids or the Family Fun categories (or, broaden your child’s perspective with an event from the World Arts, Music, or Dance categories).
The only problem is that there are too many good shows to choose from!!! These are the shows I am currently considering for my boys:
- Stomp
- Annie
- A Year with Frog and Toad
- The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley
- Shaolin Warriors
- Peter Pan
- Beakman Live
- Guy Davis Family Blues Show
That looks like a very good year.
Download the Flex Series and Broadway Series brochures and order forms here. Season tickets are now on sale.

Fayetteville’s Mud Creek Trail
May 14, 2007 | Leave a Comment
We purchased a new bike on Saturday at the Fayetteville Bicycle Company for our oldest, and our youngest began to ride for the first time without training wheels, so this was a big biking weekend for our family.
On Sunday, we rode the Mud Creek Trail in Fayetteville and had a great time. You can park at the trail head on Old Missouri Road, near Joyce Blvd. and ride all the way to Steele Blvd. We detoured from the trail to the Red Robin restaurant (on the sidewalks) and then back to the trail, and our car after dinner. The weather was perfect, and we all enjoyed the ride.
The trail has just enough compacted gravel and dirt spots to make your kids think they are off-roading. And best of all for me — no hills!
Here’s a map of the Mud Creek Trail. Or, check out Fayetteville’s other trails on the city’s new website.

Responses to Reader Question About Things for Kids to do This Summer
May 8, 2007 | Leave a Comment
I received several excellent responses to the reader question about things for her grandkids to do this summer while spending time at her cabin on Beaver Lake:
Rebecca says:
We’re big on board games in our family. We started when the kids were little, and they still play now that they’re big. Parlor games are also fun, and most kids nowadays have never played them before. Charades, 20 Questions, Dumb Crambo… Cards, jacks, dominoes — again, the video game generation often has never even played them. Older folks often think these things are old hat, but to the kids, they’re brand new.
Corinna adds:
Maybe buying him a skateboard or inline skates so he can learn a new skill and work on perfecting it while on vacation (if he doesn’t know how already).
Susan suggests:
My granddaughter and I have enjoyed making stepping stones for my garden. Take a disposable pie pan or other foil pan, follow instructions on Kwikcrete sack and fill pan with concrete. Before it dries, press handprints, marbles, rocks, shells or other items you have had fun gathering together (permanent ones; not leaves) and allow to dry.
Actually, leaves can be pressed into wet concrete and when it dries the leaves can be scraped away, leaving a fossil-like print.
Be sure to put initials and date on this wonderful keepsake.
One more thing….don’t forget to wear rubber gloves. Concrete was not made for hands!
Ginger recommends:
Something my 3 kids always love is building a fire pit and
hanging out around the "bondfire", cooking hotdogs on a stick,
smores, marshmallows. And just throwing small sticks into it. Also,
sparklers around the firepit are fun as well. Of course, parental
supervision is a must, but we always sit around there, eating,
talking, and laughing…..
These all make me ready for summertime. Any other suggestions? Comment to this post or email me directly at allsidesoflife@gmail.com
Reader Question
May 6, 2007 | Leave a Comment
A reader writes:
Our grandchildren 7 & 8, boy and girl, will be spending two weeks with us in our vacation cabin on Beaver Lake. Last summer they enjoyed boating, fishing and swimming in the lake but this year our 8 year old grandson is not very excited.
Trying to come up with some art and craft ideas. Going to a blueberry farm is a good idea but looking for ideas to do at the cabin. Can you recommend any web sites that have fun ideas for kids. We are competing with game boy, play station, video games and wrestling on T.V.
We are right there with you! My boys are obsessed with wrestling and video games.
-
I assume you are close to Eureka Springs. If so, you may want to consider the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge and spend some time on the Kings River. We just took our boys floating on the Kings this weekend and it was great (very slow and easy). We rented our canoe from the Kings River Retreat. In June it may be too low to float, but my boys had fun playing around in the water and looking for arrowheads.
-
I have also heard great things about War Eagle Cavern on Beaver Lake. Just last night a friend was saying how her four boys can spend several hours there mining for gemstones and touring the cavern.
-
As for arts and crafts ideas, I subscribe to a weekly newsletter called Kids Crafts Weekly. Many of the crafts are for preschoolers, but it might give you some ideas. Also, I love the website Family Fun. It is a Disney site, and always has great ideas. Another of my favorite sites for craft ideas is Kiddley. Unfortunately, it is not being updated any longer, but the archives have tons of ideas.
-
One of the things my boys are into right now is making T Shirts. We buy packages of Tshirts and let them decorate them with fabric markers (Crayola makes them). They really enjoy making and wearing the shirts.
-
I am clueless about girls these days, but I remember doing hook rugs in the 2nd grade. I wonder if your granddaughter would like that, or maybe some easy cross stitching?
-
Are you a gardener? My boys love helping their grandmother in the garden.
-
Also, we have found that books on CD keep our boys attention for long periods of time. They like to draw while listening to them.
-
Finally, my husband is very good at setting up scavenger hunts. That might be a good activity at your lake house. Create clues that lead to the next clue, then to the next, etc. then to a prize.
Good luck!
Other ideas, anyone? Comment on this post or email me directly at allsidesoflife@gmail.com

Cotton Hill Designs
May 2, 2007 | Leave a Comment
I recently learned about Cotton Hill Designs, a local business that creates custom t-shirts, tanks, ball caps, totes, aprons, bibs, burp cloths, diaper bags and more. You select the item, fabric, monogram, thread color, font and style, and your custom design is made to order. This photo is an example of their work.
The business was started by two Fayetteville moms who were frustrated with paying high prices for outfits that were regularly ruined by the time their kids came home from pre-school. So, they opened Cotton Hill Designs to create unique clothes and accessories at reasonable prices (ranging from $12-$30).
Look for Cotton Hill this weekend at the Ozark Regional Crafts Fair at the Northwest Arkansas Convention Center in Springdale (at the corner of I-540 and 412) from 9am to 8pm on Friday and Saturday.
