Currently, Fayetteville elementary school students have one fifteen minute recess each day, and PE twice a week. Local parents Dan and Julia Kennefick believe the school day should include more recess time, and have started a group called Fair Play for Recess to bring awareness to the issue.
Northwest Arkansas International Families
March 27, 2007 | Leave a Comment
I have several friends who have adopted children internationally, but I was not aware of Northwest Arkansas International Families until recently. NAIF is a group for families who have adopted, or are in the process of adopting, internationally. They have over 100 members, and provide resources and support to families in all stages of the adoption process.
You can find out more information and apply for membership online.

The Education Station in Springdale
March 19, 2007 | 1 Comment
The Education Station, Northwest Arkansas’ excellent resource for teaching materials, educational toys, and classroom supplies, has always been a favorite of teachers. But, did you know that the store is great for parents as well? Here’s why:
- A gift certificate from Education Station will put you at the top of any teacher’s list
- It is an easy place to pick up a birthday gift you can feel good about (and they provide free gift bags!)
- Most of the employees are either teachers or former teachers with good advice on how to help your kids learn at home
- Dextr (the Education Station’s dog) has a blog with lots of ideas and lesson plans from the store manager
- The store is very kid friendly with a train play area and changing table
The Education is located in Ozark Center Point Place in Springdale and is open 10-6 Monday through Saturday, or you can shop 24/7 online.
Recap from the Comments
March 18, 2007 | 1 Comment
It has been a while since I highlighted recommendations in the comments, so here it goes:
- Alannah’s daughter attended Washington Elementary (one of the two approved open enrollment schools in Fayetteville) and she highly recommends the school.
- Micah likes both Ricks Bakery and Chuck’s Cake Shoppe, but if forced to choose, he would go with Ricks.
- John was inspired to take his daughter hiking by some of my recent outdoor posts . John describes their adventure on the Nelson Family Blog. It is a great post if you are planning a hike around War Eagle Mill and Eureka Springs. The Nelsons also like the Drive Thru Safari and recommend taking a Suburban full of kids for some up close time with the animals.
- Rebecca is a contributor to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and shares lesson plans and other resources on her webpage.
- Allison recommends Shelby Lynn’s Cake Shoppe on Emma Street in Springdale. Great cakes. Great prices. Great iced sugar cookies, too!
- Chris’ wife and her friends were counselors at New Life Ranch and they rave about the place.

Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism has started a Travel Blog
March 13, 2007 | 1 Comment
The Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism has launched a travel blog focused on travel in Arkansas. One of its writers, Jill Rohrbach, is a mother of two who lives in Northwest Arkansas, so I expect lots of family friendly travel ideas. She has already posted about “Scream Break” — the Raycliff Manor haunted house in Eureka Springs will be open the weekends of March 16-17 and 23-24 from 7pm to midnight (for children ages 13 and older). Here’s a link to the blog.
What to do This Week: March 12-18, 2007
March 12, 2007 | 1 Comment
- Find out how to pay for your child’s college education without going broke — the Fayetteville Public Library will host a panel discussion on how to pay for college (beyond need and merit based scholarships) this Tuesday, March 13, 2007 from 6-8pm.
- Show your child that you’re a reader, too — join the Fayetteville Public Library’s "Big Read" by reading Fahrenheit 451 with the rest of the community. The kick off event is this Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at 2pm at the library. Read the book before April 14, 2007 and participate in the events scheduled for April 14-21, 2007.
- Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day — the Fayetteville Public Library is hosting a St. Patrick’s Day celebration for children ages preschool through elementary on Thursday, March 15, 2007 at 5pm with dancers from the McCafferty School of Irish Dance. Or, attend the 3rd Annual St. Paddy’s Day NWA Blog Bash at the Celtic Grille in Bentonville on Saturday, March 17, 2007 at 6pm (probably not kid friendly, but still looks fun!) Update: Matt says the place is kid friendly and has good food, too!
