Villa Belmonte Pesto — Buy Locally
January 30, 2007 | 1 Comment
Did you know that Villa Belmonte is a local food company? You can buy Villa Belmonte pesto at several locations in Northwest Arkansas, including Ozark Natural Foods, Harps, and Marvin’s IGA. The pesto can also be purchased online. From the company’s website,
Villa Belmonte products are inspired by the flavors, colors, aromas and textures of Italy. Only the finest ingredients are used, and our products are frozen to deliver the best flavor without adding preservatives or artificial flavor enhancers.
Created with contemporary lifestyles in mind, Villa Belmonte pestos allow you to craft restaurant quality meals at home quickly and easily, giving you more time to linger at the table enjoying the company of family and friends. Good food, good friends, good times – in Italian, “la dolce vita”. Enjoy!
Villa Belmonte’s website also includes tons of recipes to use with their pestos, including at least one submitted by a Fayetteville resident!
Mall Walkers Are Not Just Little Old Ladies Anymore
January 30, 2007 | Leave a Comment
When the temperature drops below freezing, stroller walks around the park are out of the question. So, many moms have taken their stroller walks to the Northwest Arkansas mall. The mall opens early for walkers (8am M-Sat, 10am Sun). I guess that means no excuses . . .
Ozark Mountain Smokehouse
January 30, 2007 | Leave a Comment
The Ozark Mountain Smokehouse is another Fayetteville tradition. The main smokehouse is located on Hwy 62, but the Smokehouse has several locations throughout Arkansas. The Bentonville location is situated on a 7 acre farmstead with a hidden spring. I like to eat lunch at the Dickson Street location. The decor is spare, but has the feel of an old country store (with a free wireless internet connection). You can order sandwiches made from the famous smokehouse meats, and they have recently added bar-b-que to the menu. You can also warm up with a bowl of chili or beans and ham. Also, the Smokehouse ships their meats, cheese, and other delicacies nationwide, so when your friends up north want a taste of the Ozarks, you may want to send them something from the Smokehouse.
Note: the Smokehouse’s web page is undergoing maintenance at the time of this posting. The only page working is the one detailing the locations.
Northwest Arkansas Locations:
- Fayetteville: 215 West Dickson Street (map); 1725 Smokehouse Trail (map)
- Bentonville: 2702 North Walton Blvd. (map)
- Mountainburg: There’s a Smokehouse on scenic Hwy 71 at Mountainburg
Where to Buy Flowers in Fayetteville
January 29, 2007 | 2 Comments
My favorite florist in Fayetteville is Flora. The tiny little shop on Block Street looks as if it belongs somewhere in France instead of Fayetteville, and the selection of flowers includes those that you will find nowhere else in Northwest Arkansas. Because Flora’s arrangements contain no fillers, they are priced higher than other florists, but the extra cost is definitely worth it.
Location: 204 North Block Avenue, Fayetteville (if you are coming from Dickson Street, the very small shop will be on your left.) Map.
Is A Diaper Bag Too Much? Try a Diaper Clutch.
January 29, 2007 | Leave a Comment
When my kids were toddlers, I never wanted to carry around a huge diaper bag. So, I would stuff a diaper or two and some wipes in my backpack and go. If only I had known about this diaper clutch by Bella Fiore Couture. It holds everything you need for a diaper change, and comes in a great selection of colors and patterns as well. What’s more, it converts into a changing mat for quick changes on the go. Does anyone know of stores in Northwest Arkansas that sell similar items? Thanks, Style Dash!
What to do This Week: Jan. 29 to Feb. 4

- The Arts Center of the Ozarks in Springdale is showing Agatha Christie’s The Unexpected Guest this weekend. Here’s a description from the Arts Center’s webpage:
Agatha Christie, undisputed mistress of mystery, creates this thriller set on an estate in Wales. As the play begins, a stranger walks into a house only to find a man murdered and his dazed wife standing over him with a gun. The unexpected guest decides to help her and blame the murder on an intruder. Clues point to a man who died two years ago; and a Pandora’s box of love, hate, suspicion, and intrigue is opened to the night air. This tantalizing tale will keep the audience playing detective until the last piece of the puzzle is in place.
The Center is presenting the show to schools next week, with a target audience of 5th through 12th graders. So, the show should be good for older kids.
Showtimes: Friday Feb. 2 and Saturday Feb. 3 at 7:30, Sunday Feb. 4 at 2:00.
Tickets can be purchased here.
-
The Fayetteville Public Library’s After School Workshops begin again this week featuring a study of exotic instruments with Kelly and Donna of Toucan Jam this Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007. The workshops are for students in kindergarten through fifth grade in the Wal-Mart Storytime Room.
The workshops are free. Registration is required and is available at the children’s desk or by calling 571 2222, ext. 4370.
- Danny Glover and Felix Justice will be at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville on Friday, Feb. 3, 2007 at 8:00pm celebrating the spoken and written words of Martin Luther King and Langston Hughes. From the Walton Arts Center’s webpage:
The evening begins with actor/director Felix Justice and his critically acclaimed portrayal of Martin Luther King, Jr. Armed with nothing but himself and two of Reverend King’s most memorable and inspiring speeches, Justice virtually transforms into the legendary civil rights leader, momentarily recreating the power of the man and his message. The evening continues with Danny Glover performing theatrical readings from the works of Langston Hughes.
Following the performances, Justice joins Glover on stage for a question and answer session. What emerges is a memorable, heart-felt experience that is not to be missed.
You can purchase tickets for the show here.
- Do not forget the Grossology Exhibit at the Walton Arts Center’s Nadine Baum Learning Center.
Greenhouse Grille — A Fayetteville Restaurant with a Healthy Kids Menu
January 27, 2007 | 1 Comment
The Greenhouse Grille, one of my favorite restaurants in Fayetteville, has a kids menu. The place is small and cozy, so it would not be a restaurant where your kids could run around wild. But, the menu is full of organic, vegetarian and other healthy options. I will avoid a string of superlatives and let you read the reviews: Arkansas Times, Arkansas Traveler, Morning News. Thanks, Alannah!
- Location: 318 South Archibald Yell (a few blocks south of the Fayetteville Square, at the bottom of the “S” curve of Hwy 71) Map
- Hours: Tuesday through Saturday 11:00a.m. to 9:00p.m.
- Prices: Appetizers, salads $4-$9, sandwiches $7-$9, entrees $12-$19, desserts $6

Washington County Freecycle Group

Did you know that Washington County, Arkansas has its own Freecycle group? You can access it here. If you are not familiar with Freecycle, here’s a bit from the nonprofit’s webpage:
When you want to find a new home for something — whether it’s a chair, a fax machine, piano, or an old door — you simply send an e-mail offering it to members of the local Freecycle group.
Or, maybe you’re looking to acquire something yourself. Simply respond to a member’s offer, and you just might get it. After that, it’s up to the giver to decide who receives the gift and to set up a pickup time for passing on the treasure.
Our main rule: Everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages.
The Washington County group currently has 3550 members. Join in to recycle and reuse one item at a time.
